These carrion birds are regarded with a great deal of superstition. They are seen as harbingers of death and their passing is often taken as an ill omen by the people of Ilayson. An individual who is profoundly troubled by the death of a loved one, to such an extent that he is incapable of moving on with his life, is often called ‘Rivern-touched’. It is firmly believed that death walks close behind these birds.
The true connection between Riverns and death (for be assured, there is a very real connection) is known to a mere handful of Sages who specialise in such matters, and they only part with their knowledge for hefty amounts of sceptres.
