Arral Vendrargan was a young son and magical prodigy in the Vendrargan family when the Ilvarrin family made its move to destroy their rivals. Arral remembers little of that night other than the screams and brutal murders of his family. He has vague recollections of his father's bodyguard shielding him from crossbow bolts as they fell into the Ilay from a boat they were trying to escape on.
Riverns are carrion birds that feed upon the death that floats down river, and much death floats down the river Ilay. When the Waterman found the boy on the riverbank, he was surrounded by riverns, but rather than feasting on his dying flesh the watermen swore they were protecting him. The boy wouldn't give his name, so they called him "Rivern". And the boy was useful, he knew magic, he made an excellent rivermage. But his soul was tortured, something in his past twisted his perception of the world. The riverns knew it, knew he was one of them, drawn to death… or was it just that they knew death would follow him?
